Guidelines for creating quality print files

The file preferred file type is PDF. If you use Adobe InDesign we recommend using the Export command. Print files made from Microsoft Office programs are not viable as is. Fixing other than PDF files is charged separately.

Colors and profiles

We recommend using the PuMu_JobOptions_1.6(C) and retain the images in the RGB color space (Adobe RGB). In CMYK jobs the RGB elements are converted to the profile matching the print material. This is why it’s important to include the correct profile for the print material in the PDF.

Profile for the Coated papers PSOcoated_v3.icc
Profile for the UnCoted papers PSOuncoated_v3_FOGRA52.icc

Please note that the body text of the print job should be 100% black. Don’t use four color black; our workflow forces 100% black to overprint and white to knockout. Please use 99% black if you want the color black to knockout.

Color Management

The ISO 12647-2 (2013) standard is used in the PunaMusta production. ICC profiles for print files and proofing can be downloaded here: PunaMusta ICC Profiles

Copy the ICC profiles to the folder:
Mac: Macintosh HD – Library – ColorSync – Profiles
PC: Drive (C) – Windows – System32 – spool – drivers – color

Product size and placement

The final size of the publication must be as in the layout. Create the multi-page publications using facing pages. The final PDF should be exported as single pages, not spreads. Don’t leave unnecessary empty pages in the final PDF.

Bleeds

If the printed image or color tone is on the edge of the page one should define the bleeds which go over the page, recommended 3-5 mm on all sides. The creator of the print file is responsible.

Images

To ensure quality the resolution of the images should be 300 dpi.

Always check the resolution of the images before placing them into the publication. Images meant for the internet are usually 72 dpi which is insufficient for high quality printing. The preferred resolution is 300 dpi, under that the images may seem blurry.

Fonts

In the layout we recommend using OpenType and Postscript fonts which should be included in the PDF file and converted to paths in the attached graphics.

Naming of the PDF

Please don’t use any special characters, a descriptive name is preferred (Brochure.pdf, Flyer_A6.pdf)
